Vitamin B12
Cobalamin is commonly called vitamin B12. This type of substance in nature is contained in small quantities in some foods of animal origin such as liver. It is a water-soluble vitamin, that is, soluble in water.
Vitamin B12 is useful for the correct functioning of the nervous system and in general to improve metabolism. It improves the function of amino acids, fatty acids and nucleic acids DNA and RNA. Furthermore, vitamin B12 stimulates immune function and the function of red blood cells. It promotes the conversion of homocysteine into methionine, thus reducing the accumulation of homocysteine in the body, which is an amino acid that increases the risk of cardiovascular problems.
The daily dosage of vitamin B12 for an adult is 2 mcg per day. The same dosage of Vitamin B12 is also suggested for children aged 15 and over and also for the elderly.
Among the various functions of Vitamin B12 are:
• Help slow down the loss of neurons during aging
• Improve the function of synapses
• Improve mood
• Promote the beauty, health and well-being of hair, nails and skin
• Prevent cognitive deficits and motor dysfunctions
• Improve energy production thus improving metabolism
• Improves the immune system by promoting the production of white blood cells
Cobalamin or Vitamin B12 has a molecular weight of 1.35 kDa and is therefore suitable for sublingual absorption.
A vitamin B12 deficiency can depend on multiple factors and tends to occur in the following cases:
• Insufficient cobalamin intake due to the type of diet
• Inadequate absorption caused by multiple factors
• Too low a reserve of Cobalamin
As we age, we have a lower capacity to absorb this type of vitamin and it is therefore useful to supplement it.
